Professional Tales: Don’t give up, help is on the way!

Clearing the interview and getting a job, through sheer merit was a big confidence booster.  The corporate world was completely new for me and boy! I was super excited to be a part of it.

The first day at work was a piece of cake; most of the day passed in introductions; getting to know our peers, organisation, the management team and the schedule for the upcoming week.

Coming from a girls’ school and college; it was a first for me to work along with men. In the past, I did have interactions, but this was a different set up. To be honest, initially, it felt uncomfortable, but I had to find my way through and overcome my awkwardness.

The following days were tough; and the grueling training schedule, did take a toll on a few peers, some of whom quit midway. I too was tempted, when I did not clear my English V&A communication round. It was real tough, comprehending the various accents and then responding in a similar manner. All throughout my academic years, I took pride in the way I spoke the language, only to realise later that my pronunciations were incorrect and sounds of certain letters were inappropriate.

It was humiliating to say the least, and had made up my mind to not show up to work the next day; but, an inner voice pushed me to give it another try. The following days, were not easy, but I was supported by some fabulous trainers, who helped me improve to the extent that I fell in love with the language, only to become an English Language Communication Expert myself and train innumerable participants later in my professional career.

Conclusion:

When days get tough, we may be tempted to throw in the towel, but if we muster the courage to walk our way through the dark tunnel, all the help you need, will be made available and there will definitely be a light at the end of it. Have faith and take the leap.
