Divine Heritage

Daily writing prompt
What aspects of your cultural heritage are you most proud of or interested in?

During my early childhood years, there was a sudden 180 degrees change in my family’s lifestyle. My father, who was once an extremely ambitious person, fiercely determined to make it big in his business, took a complete backseat to focus on the spiritual aspects of life. Before this time, I was oblivious to the diversity and the rich cultural heritage of our country, India and my religion Sikhism.

After this change, we regularly attended spiritual congregations and were in the company of some real divine souls. I specially enjoyed attending the kids congregations (attended by adolescents to young adults). They were enlightening sermons informing us of the teachings and sacrifices of not only our 10 Sikh Gurus, but incarnations of God across all religions. These sessions were not merely history lessons, but, interactive discussions, where the essence of their teachings were explained in the most pragmatic manner and how we could all benefit from them.

Through these symposiums, we understood the true meaning and the actual purpose of Indian festivals, why they were celebrated across the country with such fun and frolic. Initially, I viewed them from a ritualistic lens and was drawn only to the commercial aspects of the celebration, but, as my awareness grew, I started enjoying the ceremonies and celebrated them with the entire family, with absolute no frills.

Also, simultaneously, I make it a point to educate my little one about our Gurus so that she grows up being more aware of her roots and cultural heritage.
